Significance in God's purpose

Study Guide

The following may help you reflect further on the message
(the points could also be used as a discussion guide at fellowship groups)

  1. Discuss the following statement: “In the hum-drum of daily life, it is difficult to find any purpose let alone significance. But there has to be purpose, and there is.” You could discuss this in the context of being made in God’s image, redeemed in Christ, and renewed in the Holy Spirit.
  2. How does the idea of God’s purpose come out in Genesis 17:4-8? Can you find assurance in this passage?
  3. Discuss and apply Joshua 23:14 in context. You could supplement your discussion by looking at Galatians 3:29 and Hebrews 10:22-23.
  4. If everyone has a purpose and everything we do has a purpose, where do we fit in? Where do we fit in the church and in the world?
  5. Genesis 17:2-10 speak about the purpose of God for the nations. This is symbolised in the change of names for Abram and for Sarai. What relevance does this have for us today, and how can we apply this?
  6. How do you interpret Romans 4:18-25 in the light of Sunday’s message and in the context of your own life?
  7. Discuss the implications of 2 Corinthians 1:20-22 for today.
  8. Look at 1 Peter 2:9-12 and discuss your identity and purpose. How can we improve on our “joy in the Lord” (assurance)?
