We did it... whose way?

Study Guide

The following may help you reflect further on the message
(the points could also be used as a discussion guide at fellowship groups)

  1. How did you relate to the theme of Sunday’s message—I did it my way? How does this summarise life today? Does it sum up your life?
  2. Judges 17:6 perhaps sums up the message when it says, “Everyone did what was right in their own eyes.” Is this why we have so much trouble in the world? God says, “Do it my way and you will live.” We say, I’ll do it my way…and die!”
  3. What does the frailty of Abram's faith do for your walk with God? (Compare this to the heights of Genesis 12:1-9).
  4. How does Proverbs 29:25 relate to Abraham’s life, and ours?
  5. Discuss the following: “The statement, ‘Going down to Egypt’ in Genesis 12:10 is sometimes used figuratively for having an alliance with the world (see Isaiah 31:1) In Egypt, Abram had material possessions, but no spiritual blessing. There were no altars, no walk with God, and no renewal of the promise. In Egypt, God used Pharaoh to speak to Abram and this is always an ominous sign for God’s people.”
  6. How does Sarah’s obedience mentioned in 1 Peter 3:1-6 relate to her submission to Abram in Genesis 12? What can we apply from 1 Peter 3:1-6 today?
  7. Luke 9:25 makes a statement about gaining wealth at the expense of spirituality. How does this relate to Abram's experience? What can we do to maintain a spiritual walk with God in a secular world?
  8. How significant is Psalm 105:8-15 in the life of Abraham?
