A message for hypocrites
Study Guide
The following may help you reflect further on the message
(the points could also be used as a discussion guide at fellowship groups)
- Why is the church a good place for hypocrites? How does this fit in with what Jesus said in Luke 6:37-42?
- Discuss some of the other things you are discovering as we seek to be followers of Christ (especially in Luke’s gospel).
- Why do we find it relatively easy to judge people… and to condemn them (Luke 6:37-38)? Why is it so hard to forgive (when we have been forgiven so much)?
- Discuss the good measure of generosity that Jesus speaks about in Luke 6:38. 2 Corinthians 8:1-15 may help in your discussion.
- Discuss the following: We all come through life with scars from the past. Few, if any would pretend to be normal! In this context, all we want is to be understood. All we want is to be accepted for who we are and where we’ve come from.
- Compare and contrast the two illustrations in Luke 6:39-40. What point is Jesus making here? How does this relate to Romans 2:1?
- Is the illustration in Luke 6:40-41 meant to be humorous? Why? What is the main application in this illustration?
- How does the message to hypocrites in Luke 6:37-42 compare with what is said in Romans 14:10-13? Titus 3:2-5 may also help.
