Fishing with Jesus

Study Guide

The following may help you reflect further on the message
(the points could also be used as a discussion guide at fellowship groups)

  1. Jesus went down to the lake because there were many people there. What does this teach us about reaching out to people in need? See Luke 5:1-3. How does this relate to Luke 10:1-2
  2. In the context of finding people and talking with them, discuss the implications of Colossians 4:2-6 for us today. Why are the number of conversations we have about our faith as important as the number of conversions
  3. There are many kinds of fish, and many different ways to catch them. What does this teach us reaching people today? See Luke 5:4-7.
  4. Compare Luke 5:6-7 with 1 Corinthians 3:8-9. Discuss the co-operation needed if we are to bring people to Christ.
  5. Why did Peter respond the way he did in Luke 5:8? Why didn’t Peter make the same kind of commitment after his experience in the synagogue, with this mother-in-law, and with the crowd outside his house?
  6. Why did Jesus perform this miracle only for his followers to leave everything (including the fish) to follow him?
  7. How does Ephesians 2:1-5 help us understand the statement of Jesus in Luke 5:10b — from now on we would catch people alive?
  8. What is the most important thing you learnt from Sunday’s message?
