Learning to listen : After the Message

Study Guide

The following may help you reflect further on the message
(the points could also be used as a discussion guide at fellowship groups)

  1. There are many books on how to preach, but few on how to listen. What does this tell us about listening to God’s word? How does this relate to what Jesus said in Luke 8:18?
  2. Discuss the implications of Ecclesiastes 5:1 for today.
  3. What is involved when we come to church in repentance? How can this affect the way we hear God’s word? See 1 Peter 2:1-2.
  4. How should we understand and apply the prayer in Psalm 119:37? See also Psalm 51:10 and Proverbs 2:3-6.
  5. Discuss the difference between hearing and listening. How does this apply to the way we respond to sermons? See 2 Timothy 2:7.
  6. How do you understand Romans 12:2? How can we learn to use our mind when listening to God’s word? See also James 1:22-24
  7. Discuss the implications of Proverbs 4:20-22 in your personal life, for your fellowship group, and in the life of our church.
  8. How does Acts 17:11 relate to what we do at our fellowship groups? See also Deuteronomy 6:6-9.
  9. Using Matthew 7:24-27 as a guide, discuss the following statement: “The most important principle in listening is not what you hear, but how you hear, and more important how you apply what you hear.”
